Be Vacation Ready! Prepare in Advance with these Suggestions from Paul Davis!

Summer is officially here June 21, which means many of you will be packing up the swimmies, surf boards and beach umbrellas to get ready for vacation. While you’re busy packing, don’t forget to prepare your home for vacation too. There are several important security and property measures to take prior to leaving for your favorite location.

Vacation2

The Safer, The Better:

  • Make your house look lived-in to avoid break-ins, such as stopping the newspaper or asking a friend to clean out your mailbox.
  • Check all locks on doors and windows and set the security system.
  • Leave on a security light while turning off all others.
  • Inform your credit card company that you will not be in town.
  • Leave emergency contact information with a friend.

Property Preparedness for Vacation:

  • Unplug smaller appliances and electrical devices.
  • Turn off water valves to the sink and appliances, like the dishwasher and washing machine.
  • Place the water heater to “vacation mode” so that it doesn’t run as much and saves energy.
  • Set the thermostat to 85 degrees, but no hotter to shield your furniture, plants and pets.
  • Run your kitchen sink disposal with vinegar or lemon to remove unwanted scents.
  • Discard any trash and get rid of perishable food.

Hopefully these few tips will assist you in feeling at ease about leaving your property and allow you to fully enjoy your 2015 vacation.
